Leap, 2002
Leap, an interactive streaming video installation exhibited at the Rhode Island School of Designs Sol Koffler Gallery that networked to Brown University, University of Rhode Island, Northeastern University, and Parsons School of Design, as part of Parsons 2002 Blur Conference, turned telepresence into an activity. Tall boxes concealed computer monitors reflected onto a mirror in the lid that displayed streaming video of a viewer pulling the handle for a partnering viewer to see inside the box. At all of the locations, the box handles hung at a distance necessitating viewer cooperation. Further complicating matters for the RISD viewers, some of the handles pulled other handles and once the viewer found a handle to open the box, he or she realized the limitations if no one else was present. The viewers entered the space with imposing sized boxes, a maze of handles hanging from the ceiling, and started tugging to find an operative handle. More of an activity than an art product, Leap necessitated cooperation to uncover the mediated presence of a viewer at another location.
Thank you to OSHEAN for setting up the network.
