Existential Dilemma, 2003
In the Existential Dilemma videos, a female and I continuously flip inside a box that imposes laws of material constraint. Our repetitive flipping in the same position results from the desire for continued movement in this confined space illustrating how a structural environment defines behavior. Turned vertically, the videos distort the conventional space; it looks as if we flip perpetually without touching ground. Changing the perspective not only negates the laws of gravity but also reinforces the incessant nature of the act. Opposed to the continual flipping in the videos, the 3 x 3 photographs capture occupancy of the space of the box.
NOTE: The videos are displayed inside an 11" x 11" x 11.5" red cube on an LCD screen.
